Tranny
I have 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x2 it has 137000 miles. It used to make a whining noise when I accelerated. Then I turned off the car and when I restarted the noise stopped. It has been about a month now and the noise was just back. When I accelerate it makes a whining noise but when I get to about 40mph (cruising speed) it stops. I restarted car and it no longer makes the noise. The transmission slips occasionally and I think it is going to go soon. Does anybody know why it is making This whine?

Could be your fan. When you first start up they make a lot of noise. Doesn't sound exactly like your situation but it might lead you in the right direction

It DOES sound like a fan of some sorts. Best guess.
