Default Tire choices without lift - DD

I have a 1997 ZJ with 225/70R16 on them.

Ths ZJ is stock, but since I just purchased this vehicle, I am not sure what tires came on it stock.

I would like to put new tires that give me some off-road capability, but don;t want to affect my gas mileage or ride too much. Also I am not interested in putting a lift on it at this time.

Any recommendations?
Size? Mfg. etc..

30 inch bfg all terrain or some mud's but 30 is the largest that you can fit with out lift or major trimming.

How much additional clearance do I get with those?
Is the 2" lift (spacers & shocks) worthwhile for the occasional off-roader?

I drive 30 miles round trip on my work commute, and am looking to optimize my gas mileage, ride comfort on highway, and off-road capabilities.

Thanks for all the help btw.

- a 225/70/16 is 28.5" tall so by just adding 30" tires you would gain half the difference in ground clearance,so about .75"..not much
-sure,a 2" lift is worthwhile for offroading
-while you can retain a very good ride if lifted properly,it's never gonna optimize your mpg's by going bigger
