Guys im looking to buy a cherokee to use for hunting. It will stay at the hunting camp and be used off road 99% of the time. We have some steep hills and slippery roads, but no deep mudholes to worry with. Most people there have CJs or toyotas with 31's or 33's and go everywhere they want to go easily.
Id like to have one with a fuel inj 6 cylinder and be able to run 33's on it.
Ive never been around jeeps etc so Im not sure what to look for or what years to avoid or problems to look for on these models.
What year did they start coming with EFI ? Whats a typical lift to get it up to 31/33's going to run ?
Any other suggestions, comments etc welcomed .......

Are you talking Grand Cherokee or a CHerokee??? It helps to know so you post in the right area..
If it's a Cherokee the above posts is dead on..3" is min lift for 33's but depending on how much trimming you want to do you may want to go with 4.5" of lift.
If this is for a Cherokee and not a Grand Cherokee please let me know so I can move it. In the future read the areas before posting so you post in the right place..

Noobie here, thats why I posted was to learn from people who know them.
a cherokee (XJ) might be what your looking for...you can find one really cheap plus after market is really strong...the grand cherokee (ZJ, WJ, WK) is a dolled up version of a cherokee...not that thats bad or anything...

Is the running gear the same between them? EFI, 4 doors and A/c are the only must haves im looking for so far.
Being new to them Im trying to learn if there are any yr models to stay away from, or any that had weak drivetrains etc.
thank you for the responses

J/K both are excellent jeeps, I just prefer the look of the XJ over the Grand Cherokee..

A cherokee is basically a grand without all the options of pw, pdl, cruise etc?

If you go with the GC, get one with the 4.0. You shouldn't have any more issues than you would with an xj (cherokee) with all the same options. Both are great rigs.
A Jeep is a Jeep.

I agree with most say on selection of the XJ (Cherokee). For after market parts XJ cherokee 4.0L easy to work on in the field and they look good run strong 4 door or two. Your choice. Cheap to pick up and at 130k miles just breaking in the engine.
I am currently looking to get one myself to go along with my TJ and ZJ. I will make mine the Rock crawl type to go along wtih my TJ when the TJ is down or for when I need the space. The ZJ is my camp truck.
Suggestion though. If you do not need the 33 inch tires and do not want to cut get Budget Boost 2" kit and add stay at 30 or 31". Spend the money on good tires and lockers and the jeep will get you to any camp and hunt spot up and down any hill. This will save you on needing to regearing for fuel and performance.
Best of luck and enjoy your search.

Well the search is over. I stumbled on a 93XJ, 4.0,auto w/ the only option on it A/C and tinted glass for a price i couldnt pass up.
Already lifted 4" ? with 33's on it. Motor was said to have been built a year ago, no leaks and it doesnt smoke. It does have a cranking issue. When you go to crank it instead of 3 or 4 seconds of turning over and the motor firing up, this one may take up to 10-12 seconds. After that it runs smooth and strong. Will go thru it this next weekend and give it a full tuneup and svc.
Hit the woods with it yesterday and even with worn out tires it did everything i wanted it too.
Got a few things that need done to it, oil pressure guage stays pegged running or not, they put a rear spare tire mount on it that im going to remove, the A/c only blows out the defrost vent and the drivers seat needs the cushion replaced and recovered. R/f tire rubs the sway bar when turning tight, 2" wheel spacers should cure that ??
And I think Im going to roof mount the spare to keep the rear cargo open as much as possible.
Over all I think Im going to be happy with it
