Could be an exhaust leak at the cylinder head/manifold gasket.

a small crack on exhaust manifold? i got same problem after replacing muffler

if it is, you can try to fix it temporarily by using a putty called"thermosteel".

While it is running have someone put their hand over the tail pipe, if it is a exhaust leak it should get easier to hear and see.
