Hey man, you prolly have a bad lash adjuster (lifter) Is it constant or does it go away after the motor gets hot? You might have a cracked or loose exhaust manifold as well. The 4.7s have issues with the lash adjusters and leaky/ cracked manifolds. I have a 2000 Durango and have a couple bad lash adjusters and had to replace my drivers exhaust mani because it cracked. You can get solid adjusters for under $200 and Id recommend headers. I have Gibsons on mine.
Have a 99 JGC with 4.7 and a engine tick. Have put in new lifters, flushed the engine and put in new oil and filter, new cycle solenoid, new rod bearings, had engine head pass. side shaved, oil pressure is fine, had misfire codes but fixed. If you are in front of engine sounds like the noise comes from the front. If you are on either side, it sounds like it comes from that side. If you are underneath in rear of engine sounds like it is coming from there. Tried stethoscope and the loudest noise comes from the fuel rail.
This tick is loud when cold, but get softer when hot. Louder when under strain like going up hill. Pulled valve covers and oil is pumping good to valves. Checked for exhaust leak and have none. Put in new timing chain guides. Cannot for the life of me find where it is coming from. There has to be some one out there that has had this problem and fixed it. Any one??

I have a 2000. I have a slight valve tick when it starts up, when its cold. Once it warms up, it goes away. Some mornings I don't hear it. I have read it can be sludge build up on the valves. So my plan is 500 miles before my next oil change, I am going to top the oil off with some Marvel Mystery Oil to help loosen sludge and clean things up before i change the oil and see how it goes. Maybe after a few cycles it will go away. Its not getting any worse and as long as it doesn't I will be fine.

If it's a stuck or weak lash adjuster, you can find it by sticking a .030 feeler gauge under the rockers at the valves when it's running. The tick will disappear when you hit the right one. You may get an oil bath at the same time from the cam!
