Default Temperature gauge rising

This afternoon on my way home from work, I was sitting at a light for about 2 minutes and my temperature gauge started rising. It was sitting at the half way mark like it usually does after the car has warmed up and then started to rise. I went not even a mile and it continued to rise. After I got in the parking lot and parked I turned it off and it was half way between hot and the halfway mark. I got back into my car maybe 20 minutes later and started it up. The gauge immediately went to the last line it was at. I went to back up and my car started to shake. I put it in drive and it was slow in going forward. I parked and went back in to where I was and they were saying it may be the heater core or the thermostat. They suggested running the heat if it starts to climb again. If I am able to drive for a long time after this happens, the gauge goes back to the normal position. My Jeep is a 2002 Grand Cherokee, but I've only owned it since May of 2007. I don't know what to do. I have a feeling that no matter what I do it will cost a lot of $. I'm not mechanically inclined so anything I need done will need to be done at a garage. Does anyone have any suggestions of what it may be and how much it may cost just so I can prepare myself? Thanks for any input.

check your clutch fan.
when the engine is hot and off, try to spin the clutch fan. it should be quite stiff and difficult to spin.
when the engine is cold and off, it should spin quite easily.

but that's what i would suspect. unless the rad looks rough...

1) antifreeze level to check up
2) to Check up a cover of a radiator (density)
3) to Remove and wash out a radiator outside.

1) уровень антифриза проверить
2)Проверить крышку радиатора (плотность )
3) Снять и промыть радиатор снаружи .

I took my car to the garage and they said it looks like the fan relay isn't working right. The fan didn't work like it should, but when they hot wired it to the battery it did. I had a fan relay put in 2 years ago. I guess they don't last very long. Thanks for the suggestions.
