Just to throw my 2 cents out there. I use Wolf's Head oil in all of my cars. The 5w30 is now semi-synthetic which I use in the winter, in summer I usually use 10w40 in the Jeep that is. I do put in 6 quarts of oil and one quart of Lucas Oil treatment. Every few oil changes I will put in Motorkote also. I change oil and filter every 3,000 miles. So I buy the cheaper filter. I also always find an extended length oil filter for every vehicle I own and use them. Bigger filter and more oil is better.

I wasn't aware that Wolf's Head was still available! I haven't seen it in years. My grandfather wouldn't use anything else. His first vehicle was a Ford Model A.

Went to try and get an oil change at a local place. They told me I couldn't switch to synthetic oil because I haven't used it before, and try to sell me their "high-mileage" oil and some other stuff.

I left. I'm going somewhere else instead.

As I said before, most of today's "synthetics" aren't really. They are just super-refined petroleum. Germany in WWII started trying to make a true synthetic oil because of their petroleum shortage, thanks to Allied bombing. This got EVERYONE started. Some companies are now re-refining used oil, which if done properly, is fine. True synthetics are EXPENSIVE, which makes me wonder if Mobil isn't using petroleum molecules in their Mobil 1. How easy is it to create a synthetic long-chain hydrocarbon molecule? And in quantity?

I've read a lot about M1 switching formulas at one point as it's no longer a true full synthetic. I believe at one point Mobil sued Castrol for saying their oil was full sythenic because it wasn't from the Group IV base stock that Mobil 1 used. They ended up losing the case and started using a cheaper base stock like Castrol and Pennzoil used, because why make a real synthetic when your compatition is charging the same price for their fake synthetic right?

Modern synthetic engine oils do everything an oil is supposed to do...better than dead-dino oils. If your Cherokee has lots of miles on it, I'd choose a synthetic for high-mileage engines. I've used Red Line and Mobil 1 in the past and use M1 now. Costco sells it for $37 per 6-pack and occasionally $27 per 6-pack. I currently have about a lifetime's worth.

Never skimp on the filter. (do your research) Its your first line of defense. If you cant change your oil on time for a reason or an other, change the filter. All filters have a bypass valve and when the filter is clogged, all oil gets bypassed. stay away from Fram

Using synthetic oil allows you to use a finer filter enhancing the advantages of using synthetic oil (not blends or semi synthetics, they are just a marketing scam)

Is Royal Purple worth the money?
I saw it mentioned earlier, and the Hot Rod Magazine guys swear by it.

My jeep's been sitting for years, so I need to change the oil, spark plugs, and coolant... If Royal Purple is worth the money, I'd like to try it.

The only reason I knew it failed is because my commuter car has a cartridge filter, when I removed it and saw it had ruptured I was PISSED! I believe aside from Fram most other oil filters are made by Champion? I don't think it caused any damage but my head did crack about a year and a half later although I don't think it was related to that oil filter.
