when getting new axles the gear ratios should be the same right? just wanted to check since this is my first offroad build thanks

if you ever want to use 4WD, yes.

they need to be the same.

X2 . On pavement. In mud or snow, for an off-road only vehicle, you can use different ratios, as well as tires of different sizes from front to back.
