Default /stretched shift cable

so my 2001 wj, 4.0 42re, is having issues with the gear selector lever. the detents in the floor shifter itself seem to be working but i have to put it somewhere between neutral and reverse for reverse, between neutral and drive for neutral, between drive and 2nd for drive etc. i know the cable can be adjusted near the mounting bracket by the trans but im thinking id rather just get a new cable. has anyone else encountered an issue similar to this? i bought the jeep with this issue and i think that may have contributed to the transmission failing and now that ive rebuilt the transmission and engine i want to get it fixed so i dont run the risk of it burning up again. thanks

Default How do you adjust gear selector cable

Yes I have a similar problem where the detent is off and it won't start in park most of the time but will start in neutral when I hunt around for it. My question is how do you adjust the gear selector cable on a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD 6 cylinder automatic ? Creeveriver100 rockln1@ptd.net

There's an adjustment screw on the shifter end of the cable underneath the bezel.
