So a friend of mine called me last night with an issue with his Grand Cherokee. I had never heard of this problem so I figured I'd throw it at you guys. He has a 96 Grand Cherokee Larado with the 5.2L. Bone stock. He was driving down the freeway when he started to loose speed. He pushed the gas down to accelerate and his engine's rpms climbed but no power got to the wheels. He pulled over and turned it off. Started it again but the engine would only do its initial spike in rpms and then die. His steering wheel was also locked and he couldn't shift out of park. His check gauges light was also on.

If anyone has any ideas, they would be appreciated.

The first thing I would do is check out the brake system. It's possible a dragging brake got hot enough to boil the fluid causing the whole system to pressurize. Is it still locked after cool-down? If so, open a bleeder valve and see if the petal will depress allowing the trans to unlock.

It seems the security system or the ASD solenoid won't allow it to stay running. Why? IDK. I know the PCM will signal the shutdown if something is beyond certain parameters that might damage the engine. Or it's supposed to.
