Default ??Steering Pump Failing??

Hey guys/gals, just wanted to post to get some help/info. I'm driving a 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 5.7L and I've noticed when I crank it up I can hear what I'm reasonably certain is the power steering pump squealing. I notice the pump isn't as strong backing out or in other low speed turns, but is fine once I get up to speed. I'm assuming that this is because there is less resistance once the vehicle is truly moving than there is turning when relatively stationary. Fluid levels are good on the pump tank, but I can see a few bubbles in the tank occasionally. Do these pumps have to be bled like brake lines? I haven't replaced or done any work to this pump or system since I've had it back in the winter.

No bleeding required. It's probably time to have the 11 year old fluid flushed, it may help. You should also make sure the belt tensioner is working properly and inspect the belt.

Question, can i put the jeep on jacks, loosen the return hose, then turn the wheel to purge into a jug? Shouldn't hurt as long as the reservoir doesn't run dry, right, or is there a better way of doing this?

I haven't checked the tensioner or belt yet, I'll try to check them out this evening.

I never went though that much effort with a steering pump. I basically suck out as much fluid as I can from the rezzy and replaced with new. but, as you stated removing a return hose would work just don't let it run dry if possible.

Yeah, if you let it run dry, you'll have to start the air purge all over again.
