Hi I got a 97 4.0 with the 42re trans.
The problems is when in reverse if I give it any load it will stall like a manual trans. I checked the pan there is no piece of snap rings in there. Thank you for any help.

shift normal in forward gears, any "humming" at highway speed?

Most of the time yes. But sometimes will not up shift in any gear till high rpm. I also check the tv cable and it's good.

when you had the pan down you didn't adjust the low/reverse band right?

No didn't touch anything just looked for piece of snap ring in the pan or metal shaves.
