Default slips in 1st. restart and works fine?

Hi. Have my 1995 GC limited 600 miles away from home on a job right now. It just started slipping in first gear. When I restart it it works fine. Full power. Sometimes I have to restart it over and over again to get it to work. Its only happened while its been raining but that can't have anything to do w/ it?? can it?? Anyways...the level and color of the fluid is fine. Any ideas? Am I causing a sh#t ton of extra damage driving it like this?

THANK YOU!!

My first thought is that you're a touch low on fluid and once it's warmed up it's fine. Had a Ford transmission do that to me years ago. So, if you haven't, check you're transmission fluid level. Rain may be provide some additional cooling to make you're trans slip until it gets good and warmed up.

Also, take a sniff of the fluid and see if it smells burnt. The burnt smell means that something more serious is going on in the bands and may indicate big work. Go find a trans shop.

Might want to ask the guys you're working with for a recommended shop.

It's not much, but I hope it helps.

It actually happens warm and cold. The fluid level is fine and it smells okay. I'm on the job alone so I can't get any recommendations on an honest shop. I'm scared of taking it to a mechanic I don't know and getting raped for a couple of grand on something that is probably minor. It hasn't given me a problem for a few days now so I'm thinking about just rolling the dice w/ it for the next 3 weeks until I'm back home. Thanks for responding!

It could be a clogged trans filter, a buddie of mine has an issue similar to yours and says thats his problem.

You could ask around and get quotes for diagnostics. Find a shop that isn't too much, and see what they say is wrong.
