1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Larado V8. After having my driver side half shaft replaced and new brakes on the front my Jeep started making a loud clunk noise randomly after releasing the brakes and putting back on gas. It has been happening off and on now for about 3 weeks. Then three days ago driving down the highway it kicked itself from 4 high to 4 low. It also started to try to do it again on a back road but I heard it trying to kick out so I let off the gas and it stopped. Do you know what the issue might be and the best and least expensive way to fix this?

Hey does your current transfer case have 2wd, 4 part time, 4 full time, and 4 low? If so, I have a working 242 just sitting here in missoula. I know a few of the grands came with the 242.

It is all time 4 wheel drive. shifter on the floor only has 4 high, N, and 4 Low
Old fart with a wrench
You can check with other people, but I think there is a spline difference between the 242 and the 249. I think Busted's right. I think the 242 only was available with the 4.0
