Default To rebuild or get a low miles junk yard trans?

So the tranny in my wrecked(plan on repairing it)96 GC slips really bad. Tried filter and fluid. Also adjusted the bands. No luck. So should I rebuild it or find a low miles one from the junk yard. It has a 5.2 v8.

I'd try and determine what caused the tranny to fail in the first place. Rebuilding it might give you a clue into what happened. If there's something else in the drivetrain that is off, perhaps its possible something put a strain on it causing it to fail. If you drop in a used tranny, you may solve the problem all together or it could be something else somewhere in the drivetrain and you'll blow the used or rebuilt one again if you don't check everything over carefully.

Putting fluids in it when it's already toast wouldn't do much. Was it empty when you filled it? Did you measure how much came out vs how much went in?

Just my own thoughts. I'm no mechanic tho.

I did replaced the transfer case and the drive line was a little to long, but it was acting up before that. It was my daughters jeep. I assumed it was the transfer case giving her trouble. It does have 317000 miles on it. The TC was really loud after 30 MPH. There was alot of sludge in the pan. I let her drive it to long with it slipping. It might have been low on fluid to long. Not much came out when doing a filter fliud change. So some of that sludge might have gotten in the torque convertor. So I guess thats why I asked rebuild or Junkyard. Rebuild kit on ebay is $140.00 junkyard tranny is $50.00. Then $30 for new fluid and filter. Then she was in a accident with it. Now it wont get out of its own way. I'm surprised I made it to the body and back.

That "sludge" in the pan is clutch material and a lot of it is fine enough to not be stopped by the filter. With that many miles on it, I wouldn't be suprized if it needed a clutch drum and other hard parts. I think you'd be time and money ahead if you bought a rebuilt.

My local recycling yard has 6 ZJs in it and only one has a good trans in it. The owner tells me some of them are probably just needing solinoids, but you take a chance buying one. He has a 30 days exchange policy, but I wouldn't want to put one in only to yank it out again.
