I have seen several posts regarding temporarily fixing a rattling catalytic converter by screwing drywall screws in the bottom. My question is how long should the screws be?

When I pound on the bottom, I can hear it shake inside. I would like tobtrybthis before trying to replace it since I cannot weld a new one on.

 

I tried putting about 8 drywall screws in the bottom of the cat, but it didn't help. I guess I will be buying a new one, because we have E Check here and I have to have one.

Can I install a new one with welding it?
