Question Problems with 4x4 Please HELP!!!

Hey Everyone!

When i put my Jeep in full time 4x4 or part time. And I drive the Jeep, the steering wheel starts to studder like if something was in the way.

Usually I drive in 2WD but when I shifted into 4FullTime for a mile or so. After switching back to 2WD the car's front started to jump hardly when I was turning left or right. It lasted for a few sharp turns and went back to normal soon.

After that I didn't shift into 4WD for 2-3 days and when I did - got the "jumping" back. But now it lasts for more than a week. It was worse right after shifting into 4FullTime and back to 2WD - it jumped even with a slight turn of the wheel. Now it jumps only at sharp turns, when parking etc. Sometimes it smooth even in a really sharp turn, but usually not.

This is a stock Jeep with stock tires. I just bought it as-is used. It runs perfect in FW drive. But when on 4x4 the steering wheel studders and make a squelling noise.

What could cause this problem?

Thanks!

Well for starters if you drive in 4wd on dry pavement and turn it will do what you just described. I'm pretty sure that is what the jerking of the steering wheel is. Now to your bigger issue, why the transfer case isn't disengaging when you disengage it. This is likely caused by your shift linkage, which just needs adjusted. Hope this helps, its a start at least

Do not drive on pavement in part time 4wd, only use fulltime. I would check the fluid first, that would be the easiest thing to start with. Also check the tire sizes, They MUST be the same size and preferably the same make and tire design.

no dipstick, crawl underneath. on the transfer case you will se to big plugs bottom is the drain top is the fill. Open the top(fill) plug and fill till it cant take anymore.

That wouldn't hurt, but to be honest I still think its the linkage. Just thought I'd be helpful

Sounds to me like normal 4WD handling. It is kinda weird. Make sure you are disengaged if you don't need to use it. Otherwise...slurrrrrpp! goes the gasoline!
Follow your jeep booklet's instructions on what to use, I don't have mine in front of me, but I think it is just tranny fluid, but check the book! Just crawl under and start pouring until you yell 'dang it!'

Use ATF+4. Walmart sells the Mopar brand, that is what I use.
