I'm on holiday and my 2000 Grand Cherokee WJ has developed a major power steering leak.
The fluid is leaking at the joint of the vertical shaft just below the fluid reservoir.
See picture.
I'm supposed to drive home tomorrow morning (600 mile drive but mainly straight roads).
There is a Jeep dealer nearby where I could bring it for repair but I wonder how big a job this would be if it is just the seal (which I suspect it is).
Any advice or insights are much appreciated.
When I repaired the leak in my ZJ power steering gear the biggest difficulty was removal of the large forward facing cap.
The FSM says to remove the snap ring and turn the input spline to pop off the cap. It did not work as advertised.
Instead mine was a two person operation. My brother got a workout turning the steering wheel back and forth while I held that cap from popping off, sending the guts onto the ground.
After he broke a sweat I announced it was working. Prior to his dropping dead the cap came loose.
In my case the failed seal was under the cap, so it was just replace and reassemble.
For the output shaft seal failure more significant disassembly is required.
