posting motor question for a friend
ok, so heres the deal i have a cherokee sport with a 4.0l and i know that motor quite well. my friend just got from his dad a 96 grand with a 4.0l. he doesnt really know anything about cars but like goin wheelin with us.
problem is it has rodknock you can hear standing next to the car, and it really loud when the hood is open.
now ive told him thats a bad bad sign for the motor, and the motor doesnt have a long life left. everything ive ever learned tells me the motor doesnt have a long time to go.
how serious of a problem would you guys judge this to be?
just trying to show my point, and help him out before he has a much bigger problem.

A rod-knock is a sign that the engine has internal problems related to the bearings on the connecting rods. Driven easily it may go quite a while before the damage causes the engine to seize. Or if driven as if nothing were wrong it could self destruct at any time without warning. If your friend doesn't like the idea of being stranded he should fix/replace that engine ASAP. JMO
