I'm wondering if I can remove the front driveshaft out of my 94 grand Cherokee with the 249. I only want to do it because I need to replace the t case and I'm afraid driving it on the highway to the mechanic shop will do more damage. It's tolerable to drive in town right now but it binds sometimes on tight turns. It's 45 miles from my door to the mechanics door and almost all highway. It's a shop that mostly only works on jeeps and I'm swapping in a 231 t case other wise id have a local shop do it.

Yes, you can if you're going to replace the t/case anyway. Usually what that does is cook the viscous coupling, but apparently you don't care about that. Just be aware your jeep will roll in Park because there is nothing to stop the driveshaft from turning. It will creep slowly as the front driveshaft yoke turns. Just carry a chunk of firewood with you to chock the wheels.

Do you think a 45 mile drive at highway speeds will cook it and kill it? I'd hate to have it lock up before I get to the shop

Why not just take the parallel roads? Your not going that far anyway and if you have problems, which I doubt you will, you won't have to worry about getting towed off the highway.

Never thought of that!! That's a good idea. No traffic, to worry about. Might take longer but that's ok.

The one day they decide to work on the access roads lol. Made it to the shop in one piece. Rode at 65 on the highway and 50 on the back road. Pulled in the shop but the t case wasn't happy lol. Even got 24 mph lol. Should have it back wed morning. And got new tires too. Next issue alarm disconnect lol
