Oil Sending Unit

Oil Sending Unit
I have a 2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo. I need to change my oil sending unit, I see I need a deep socket, anyone know what size? Also can I remove the oil filter without losing oil?
I'm no mechanic but you guy's have saved me a lot of money!!!
