Default Oil Gauge fluctuates with acceleration Help?

I have a 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 6 cylinder, 4.0 fuel injection.

Recently when I have been idling the oil gauge will drop down to 0 and the Check Gauges light will come on. Then, when I accelerate, the oil gauge will climb back up to 40 and remain there until I come to a stop where it once again drops back down to 0.

My oil levels are fine. I talked with the service department of my local Jeep dealer and they suggested trying a thicker oil and/or using some Lucas oil stabilizer. They said if that doesn't help it could be any number of things from my pump to the engine bearings, or even just the sensor.

Has anyone come across this problem before? Money is tight in my world right now and any suggestions as to what the problem might be or how to resolve the issue would be greatly appreciated.

You need to put a mechanical gauge on the motor and verify oil pressure. Personally before I was able to do that I would not drive the vehicle. No knocks or anything? How long has this been doing this?

You'd know if there was really no oil pressure. Ever heard a motor with no oil? Not easily mistaken.

Also, its common knowledge that the oil pressure sending units fail often. My wife's TJ does it all the time.

There was a time when vehicles didn't have oil pressure gauges at all...

I have a similar issue but i know what the problem is. Oddly enough, when my belt is slipping from being wet, and I don't mean slipping on just the ac compressor, all the hairs hit zero and the check gauges light comes on. As Casey said, it could be the sending unit or the belt slipping. I'd say the belt because at idle it's zero. But when you accelerate it's goes back up. Look into both

I first noticed the problem a week or two ago and it only happened on that day.

And now it happened again just yesterday and is still happening today 10/17.

There are no knocks or other sounds/concerning issues. The Jeep seems to run fine with the exception of the problem I have stated.

I guess I'll try testing my pressure with a mechanical gauge. Hopefully I am getting pressure and it's just the sending unit that's defective.
