Are you sure you have a 249TC? Didn't think they were available in 1993. What are the position listed on the shifter? Have you pulled the cover off the console to verify something didn't fall into the shifter mechanism. Have you disconnected the shifter linkage from the TC shift arm to see if the binding is in the shifter or inside the TC?

sometimes my TC stuck when I first got my jeep. I put the selector in 2WD while in drive and hold it down then let off the brake. Lightly tap the throttle and I hear a quiet "thunk" sound. Hope that helps.

I have since adjusted and lubed, never had a problem again.

I bet the linkage is binding up or corroded it probably has never been shifted. I have a friend whose 96 was like that. The woman that had it before him never shifted it out of 4hi. You will probably need to take the linkage apart and clean it. I would purchase a Haynes/Chilton manual they can be a great help on things like that.

I have a 1995 Cherokee. The stock transfer case got busted so the former owner went to a junk yard and got what they said it needed. They ended up giving him a NP249. That particular case is used in a Grand Cherokee that is full time 4WD There is no option for 2 wheel drive. What I suggest...as I am having to do it myself.... Get a manual locking hub set so You can unlock the front hubs to prevent "Hopping/chirping" while turning. Yes the "truck" will technically still be in 4WD but at least its not wearing your hubs out... And I was also told about a kit that can override the front drive shaft so that the front Diff isn't engaged. I have yet to find a kit... it is supposed to be made by Warn.

It's like a thousand bucks for that hub kit though. A boneyard partime TC would be a lot cheaper.

Yeah you're prolly right about that. I talked to the guy I bought the Jeep from. There is a chance I might be able to exchange the Tcase the folks out at this particular "Yard' gave him the wrong one so they said as long as he brought the Case with him up there for them to match it up they will honor an exchange. Crossing my fingers and hope for the best.

well I think I may have already fixed it. I say "may" because I haven't been able to drive it at all cuz I pulled the motor on it. but that locking hub idea sounds pretty sweet!
