I have a problem with my 2002 Grand Cherokee. It has no brake lights that work in the tail light assemblies. The brake light above the rear window does work ever time I put on the brake, so that tells me that the brake light switch must be working, Anybody have an idea what would cause neither of my brake lights to work. Replaced both bulbs and still no brake lights.

Probably a fuse, or a short somewhere. Check your fuse diagrams and check to make sure you don't have one popped. If i remember correctly, (I may be, probably am wrong) the light above the rear window is on a different fuse than the bottom two.

 

there is a circuit board in one of the rear taillight assemblies that will sometimes fail and cause very crazy behavior

Well Guys

Fuses are OK and I can't seem to get to the circuit board the tail light assembly is glued together. I do have the 12v's from the brake switch to both my tail light assemblies, both stop lights work on my boat trailer when plugged up. Any other ideas.

See if you can access the power wire running to the tail light. Use a test light and have someone hit the brakes. If it lights up then it could just be the ground or light housing. My dads van had the same problem power to the housing but not to the bulb. Replaced the housing and brake lights worked.

Chase it down, thats wiring. I normally start from the fuse block to the problem and chase chase chase. hahaha

 

That is what I was talking about, I used a meter and when somebody steps on the brake pedal I have 12 V to both pig tail plugs that plug into the tail light assembly which is the brake light wire because when they let off my volts drop to 0. I tried this several times on each side. Looks like I am going to have to purchase two new tail light assemblies and go from there! Any other fixes other then purchasing new assemblies?

Did you make sure the ground is good? Thats the only other thing that could be wrong that I can think of.

 

Check the Trailer lights if you have a tow packaged i have had no lights past 3 or so days and i took every thing out and it worked and like when i pushed on the brake the computer screen and stuff in the jeep would flicker includeing the radio i messed with the tow wires and it fixed the promlems they work now i am having them removed tomara. hope it helps

 

Check for corrosion in the lamp sockets

 

that circuit board fails inside teh light assembly and the only thing you can do is replace the assembly.

 

ts thanks, I think that is my problem cause one quit first and a about 2 months later the other one quit. I tried to take one of the tail light assemblies apart, the back on them have clips but they have epoxied the back on it. I guess this is a way to make sure you have to purchase a whole new assembly. You can not get it apart without messing it up beyond repair. Looks like I will be ordering 2 new assemblies.

2001 JEEP GRAND CHEROKEE

I have been trying to fix my break lights which won't work. My tail
lights work and my blinkers work but no brake lights.

I have changed the bulbs; didn't work.
I have changed the sockets; didn't work.
I have changed the fuses; didn't work.
I have changed the connectors in the tail light; didn't work.
I have changed the brake light switch and adjusted adjusted properly;didnt work.

What the hekkin hek is going on!?!

 

Check the bulb holders, the part that actually holds the bulbs. Sometimes they get hot and melt enough to release pressure on the bulbs enough to break contact. Try switching the reverse light holders to the brake lights and see if they work. Melted plastic seems to be a common problem with WJ tail-lights, especially if you spend a lot of time in traffic with your foot on the brake. All the bulbs and holders are the same, the difference is in the wiring in the housings.

 

If one side failed and shortly afterward the other side failed, it is likely the boards. Same age, same heat etc. After monkeying around with mine for way too long to keep them working, I bought a set from EBAY for cheap. It made my wife happy and allowed the local law enforcement more time to pursue real crime.
