Default newbie larger tire size/engine size performance question

hello. i tried looking at the threads first before i asked this..

i am looking at buying my first jeep grand cherokee laredo ,3.7, 2006.
i've been driving blazers for 20 yrs.
i was at some dealers yesterday and the tires on them are 235/65r/17's.
i just didnt like the tires, they were too small. i did see a set on a 07 "limited" that were 245/65r/17's. they were better. they looked alittle wider. i thought the 65 # is the width and the 235 , etc. is the height only ?
the 3.7 jeep is really gonna push me to the max financially and i dont want to get too involved with having to buy other rims . alittle wider and taller is all i need. the sales person didnt know anything about tires. just wanna know my options?
also, if i went alittle bigger, how much would that effect my acceleration with the 3.7....thanks

First let me say Welcome to CF.
The first number is the width, the second is the height of the sidewall in relation to the width in percent. For instance:
1.the 235x65x17=235mm wide and the sidewall is 152.75mm tall
2.the 245x65x17=245mm wide and the sidewall is159.25mm tall
The 3.7 isn't exactly a power dog to start with. I don't think it would affect the performance that much as they're not that much bigger. It will slow down the reading on the speedo a little though. JMO

thanks for the info!!!!!!!!!!!!! i test drove one today. a 65 anniversary 06 , 35,0000 , 3.7.. it had 245's stock with it. it was alittle slow. i would'nt be towing though... it dropped gears to get more power quite often from 0 -45 mph. after that it was pretty good . i wasent stepping on it i cant swing the 4.7 engine. i might still get one just not sure if the gear changing would get annoying . my 4.3 blazer had the ZR2 package with better gearing for the stock 31's so when you gave it gas it had better response....

You need to keep the OD dis-engaged on those (in the city) and they won't keep shifting as much.

The manual states to keep it dis-engaged in city driving or hilly terrain, and when towing. It changes the shift patterns as well as disabling the OD.
