There is a grinding noise coming from the rear, but its only in reverse. I'm not sure where to start looking but I know its not the tires.

Welcome to CF!
Have someone pull the cover on the rear differential and inspect the gears.

love my jeep
Thank you twice. I feel welcome and I do love my jeep. My mother had an older model. I will do what you suggested but what exactly should be looking for?

Oh.. come on, Dave! Throw parts at it? (gear oil)
New guy... jack up the rear end and turn your tires backwards. See if they make a grinding noise. Probably a scratching noise.
Worn out brakes will make noise.
It's cheap, free, and easy to do, and you don't need a wrench or 90wt gear oil to finish the test.

Sorry to say, I believe Ranger is right. Chances of a rear diff problem on a 2000 is slim. I would check the rear brakes. The pads may be worn out or you have a scored rotor.
