Default New guy with Transmission question

Hello, new here and to the jeep thing, dad had cherokee and a bud of mine had a couple nice cherokees so when i stumbled on to a 98 for 350 bucks that just needs a tranny i jumped on it. fully loaded everything works clean interior, few dings, tiny bit of rust, nothing bad, and starts up for me no prob just wont move. Its the 4.0 with select track 4wd with a 242 t case, so i did some homework i know it needs a 42re tranny. question is will any 42re work that i come across? or does it need to be specific to 4wd or the select track instead of the full time 4wd? and if its specific how can i tell on the tranny if its the one i need? number on it end with certain numbers or something? any info helps, thanks.

the transmission has to be specific to 4wd and have the same bellhousing pattern for the 4.0. You can swap the 242 for a 231, then you will have a part time 4wd. Be sure to swap the t-case gear indicator at the shift lever if you do the swap.
