Moving gear into 2nd

Moving gear into 2nd
Hello,
I'm new on here, just bought a Grand Cherokee 2004 with 2.7 engine which is, at present going well. When in drive the gears change when they ought to but, and here's my question. I am unable to move the selector to 2nd and obviously into 1st.
I can move it into 3rd but when I try 2nd the light goe's on but will not stay there and it will not go down to 1st.
As I tow and am expecting sometimes to have to move a caravan on a muddy field I will need at times to be able to lock it into 1st.
Can anybody please advise.
