Default Locker for 1996 ZJ with rear D44A

hello,

is there only one locker for the rear D44A? only the aussie locker?
i donīt think thatīs a good idea in a DD that's used during the whole year (rain, snow, ice).
and the horrible clicking....

do you know another locker that fits in a rear D44A???

the aussie locker is the only locker available for the dana 44a. its not a bad locker and eventually the clicking goes away you have to realize that you are driving with an auto locker drive accordingly.

on that note i believe ARB is working on something to acomodate for the 44a

thanks kyle for your answer.

i drove a detroit locker in the rear of a XJ. and it was hard to handle in the winter. most people say the aussie isnīt as good to handle as the detroit that comes complete with an own carrier.
thatīs why iīm a bit afraid of installing an aussie in the rear.

in my old TJs front the aussie was only for about 1500 mls.
then i took it of because of itīs annoying clicking.

do you know what ARB is working on? are there some facts on their website?

it was just information that i picked up online, i wouldnt say that it came from a reliable source but i will try to find more information and post it up here if i can.

but yes the aussie locker isnt all that great in winter conditions not really recomended.

would you recommend the stock trac lock or an aussie in the rear for onroad use (if it rains or snows)?

is the aussie better off the road?

the aussie will be much better off road as it is a "true" locker. but in those rainy conditions your just going to have to be very careful. the trac loc will be your better bet if your worried about the on road characteristics.

From what I've seen, I wouldn't lock that Aluminum 44 ever at all period.

As Jeep found out Aluminum really is not a very good metal to make a housing out of. Or I will say at least in this application. There are more gear failures from that axle than probably any other.

Light duty and driving them daily seem to help them last a bit longer, but the ones I've seen on the rack at the shop haven't even been wheeled hard. Most users that wheel their grands would rather have a D35 instead of the 44a.

the weak point of a 44 is the carrier/ with the flex of aluminum I'd look for a 35

aussie all the way, I've heard great things about them, especially in 44a. The 44a is better than a d35. who ever said that jeep guys would perfer a D35 over a 44a is smoking crack. Yes the housing is the weak spot on the 44a but a truss and some chromo shafts go a long way. Dont waste any money on a D35.

edit: If you want to do a axle swap, swap in something stronger than what you have. Swapping in a Dana 35 is a bad idea, trust me. Go to the junk yard and pull a Ford 8.8.
