Default KNOCKING!!!!

ok so when i am coasting or braking, especially when turning, i hear a loud knocking coming from either right below my feet (i can feel it on the floor sometimes) or behind me. its pretty loud and i was thinking. could the chain in my transfer case be doing this? im in 2wd so i wouldnt thing so, but i have no idea. second idea was bad pinion bearing. anywho has anyone had this happen? or is anyone familiar with tearing apart a transfer case?
