Just bought a 2002 Jeep grand cherokee limited for $1500 bucks. It has blown head gaskets but for the price I couldn't resist!

By saying head gaskets, I assume you have a 4.7L ? Before or after you do the head gaskets you still are going to need find out why the head gaskets failed, overheated etc. To remove one head or both is about the same amount of work, a little more to do both. I would also think about replacing the chains and tensioners and possibly the guides, there are 3 chains and 3 tensioners too ( 1 primary, 2 secondary) The best thing to have is a good manual to go by for repair procedures and torque specs, something like a factory manual or alldata disc

yeah. I plan on figuring out why it overheated before I do the head gaskets. I'm kinda hoping the hydraulic fan is still good cause I heard those are $1000?!? why on earth would they do that.

Hydraulic fan is a pull from the JY. If it doesn't work take it back and get another. You also need a specific PS fluid/hydraulic fluid for that setup go to a jeep dealership for it do not use regular PS fluid. Don't forget to get the heads checked also it would be a good time to install HO cams if you can find them and the 04 either HO or non HO intake and manifold since you will be taking yours off to pull the heads anyway.

Yeah that's what I plan on doing with the fan situation, also going to go buy a case of that power steering fluid because I don't wanna go to the dealership more than i have to. This already has the 4.7 high output so no need to do all that. It's kind of a restoration because im pretty sure the lady who owned it last was a tweaker so the inside is trashed but it will clean up real nice. I appreciate all the input lol

Finally got around to working on the new jeep and found out it does indeed have blown head gaskets and possibly cracked heads because lots of exhaust coming out of the radiator. Also had to call out hazmat for the interior. haha

How can anybody stand to drive a trash heep? Take some pride in your ride people! Some TLC and elbow grease will make the interior look nice, nice buy.

So, I got the heads pulled off took them to the shop and got bad news. .015 out of spec or whatever. Never knew buying a newer jeep would bring parts that are really hard to find and expensive.

yep the 4.7's were notorious for warped heads when people overheated the pi$$ out of them

so found rebuilt heads from Autozone that are high output for $400 each, pulled the motor last night and found out the block kind of splits in half!? lol this is going to be an interesting build that is for sure.

I was gonna say, at that rate, drop another motor in it, but the block pretty much seals the deal.

Still, you drop $1500 into a motor, you still have a very decent V8 WJ for around 3k, that's not bad at all.

Pictures of block.

I believe its comes that way because its sealed and has bolts but I've never seen that before. also found out why the oil pan gasket is so expensive
