The problem was finally solved. The hard starting was due to the glow plugs not being activated on cranking. After replacing the glow plug control control module, battery, glow plug relay, earthing cables, the issue was resolved by changing the alternator. The mechanic doesn't know why changing the alternator worked - he sees no direct relationship between the alternator and the glow plug control system.
