Issue with rebuilt transmission on 1997 ZJ
1997 grand Cherokee with V8 5.2 quadratrac.
We had the transmission rebuilt about 1 month ago for $1700 because it wouldn't stay in park.
There is a annoying whirring noise coming from under shifting area. The noise starts at about 35 mph when it shifts into the next gear(4th?).
The noise goes away if I turn off the overdrive or shift into neutral. Comes back if I turn overdrive back on or shift back to drive. If I turn overdrive off from the start I don't get the noise.
The noise will stay until I slow to a stop. It come back again at about 35mph
I do not get it if I drive in 2nd.
I can make the pitch and volume of the noise to change by moving the transfer case lever back and forth a bit.
So is this looking like a transmission issue and I need to take back to the shop or something else like the TC?
Thanks!

The point is, we do not have the vehicle in front of us and we're not able to look into a crystal ball and pull a diagnosis out of our butts. Was the noise there before the work was done? Don't get all emotional and butt hurt just because you didn't get the answer you wanted. Go to pirate 4x4 and ask the same question. I don't think you'll like the answer you get there either.

umm...I was serious your opinion was helpful. I will be brining it back to the shop. Meanwhile I want to learn what I can so I hopefully I can be prepared for what they might say.

JMHO, but what Busted said is true. It is near impossible to diagnose over the internet, but if the noise wasn't there before the rebuild, it's obvious something the shop did caused it. They may be reluctant to fix it, but they should stand behind their work. You can threaten them with legal action, but if you do, be prepared to do so.

And if they do find a new problem, at least you can get it fixed.
I though you were being sarcastic. Sorry.

I am very transmission ignorant so before taking it back to the shop I hope to learn what I can so I will be somewhat prepared for any reluctance.
So, a couple of questions:
I am hoping it isn't the transfer case. Would turning off the overdrive or putting it into neutral eliminate noise from the TC?
Would an overdrive unit/gear be part of a transmission rebuild?
Thanks

I think the shop may have over looked a bad bearing or planetary gear set. At least I don't think they will have to drop the whole transmission, the overdrive is in the tail of the tranny ...I think.

I'm not familiar with Mopar transmissions, but I have done several GM Turbo Hydromatics. The internals ALL come out the front, and to get to anything in the back requires everything in front of it to come out first. I'd be willing to bet it's the overrunning sprag clutch assembly for the overdrive. This is a small planetary unit that only drives in one direction. I may be totally off the wall, but that's my opinion.

Took GJ in on Friday. He said it sounded like it was coming from TC. He is going to hoist it up today and see whats going on. Hopefully it's the transmission and covered under warranty.
Thanks

BTW, I'm assuming because of you user name, you're in Hawaii? Sometimes location is important when trying to diagnose problems. I once was posting with a guy with a cold starting problem. Came to find out he was on Owahu while I was freezing at -15* here in NY! His cold start was at 65*. Makes a difference, don't you think?
