what controls the overhead console lights is there a box or what

I had a 96 and there was a thin black button on the door jam (not on actual door but on the body of the vehicle on the jam)...When you close the door it is supposed to push the button in to deactivate the lights but obviously is a common problem.

I just unscrewed it and unplugged it...

EDIT: Here is a picture but this is what controls the lights only when doors are open...However, sometimes they don't work right and stay on when the door is closed....

On my '97 you could turn them on/off individually by pressing the lense.

At least on my 1993, the switch you have with an arrow is for the VIC.
