Default Hvac can speed help

Hey guys what's up. I'm new to owning a jeep and I have a problem with my fan speed for my hvac. I own a 96 GC limited 5.2. The fan speed only works on high and if it set to anything else it turns off. I replaced the resitor under the glove box with no change . My truck does have climate control. If anyone else knows why it shuts off or can point me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

if youve replaced the resistor, my only other guess would be the a/c control unit

Check the connecter at the resistor, they tend to melt and loose contact. If you go to the dealer to buy the resistor, they will always ask you if you want the harness connecter also. That was my first clue on my Caravan. I had to pry the connecter off and then go back to the dealer and buy the connecter.

Dave, from what you could see did the connector have better welds or is that not applicable in this case (sorry never seen what you're talking about). I've read several of your posts and you've indicated a common issue is the solder points on many of the electronics. I anticipate on using my solder equipment as things fall apart on my 98

No, it was the heat from the resistor that melted the connector, much like the contacts on the tail lights that cause the brake lights to malfunction. I've been working in molded plastics for over 40 years. There are plastics that will take the heat, but manufacturers will use the cheapest ones they can buy.

The bad solder joints are because of Federal mandates to use lead free solder. Depending on the composition, lead free solder can be brittle and crack with vibration. Also, lead free solder contains silver, which is expensive, so they only flash it once in the wave tank. The bottom line is "cost of manufacture". It's really a shame because modern solid state electronics is pretty durable compared to a few years ago. You no longer have transistors burning out, it's always the resistors and capacitors that give up.

Most components have a typical life span (in use) that's around 10 to 15 years. It's no wonder a lot of folks with older Jeeps have issues regarding the components themselves. Chyrsler should have known better flowing the solder like they did though.
