Hi. My Jeep was knocking so I took off the oil pan to see what’s going on. Finished tonight so I can’t see much but the oil pan had a piece of aluminum is it and I’m wondering where it came from and how bad my Jeep is. It also had some metal flakes in it but not much and pretty small. It’s a grand Cherokee 99 4.7 l v8. Thanks for the assistance!

I think the first thing you should do is perform a compression test of all 8 cylinders.

 

I don’t have a compression tester. Do you think it could be from the cylinders?

 

Whether it's from the cylinders, rods, valves, etc a compression test would at least rule some of it out. If you have an Autozone near by they might have a compression tester they can loan out.
