Default horrible noise when the od is on

The other day i was driving at 50mph and i started to hear this horrible grind/rattle. I hit he od off button on the dash and the sound when away. From that it seems that there is something wrong with the od, i have never worked on one of these transmissions and know nothing about them. any help would be greatly appreciated. It is a 95 JGC 4.0L Auto/249transfercase.

You could have a bad planetary gear set. I would have a transmission shop check it out.

That wasn't what I really wanted to hear. I will take it in and let you know.

Shop said that it was most likely the barring in the overdrive. And now it won't consistently up shift into third gear. So it needs a full rebuild. I think I'm going to cut my losses and sell the thing as soon as the title shows up in the mail.

A rebuilt transmission is a hell of a lot cheaper than a new car.

In most cases you are right. But I only paid 1800 for the grand Cherokee and I don't want to put in another 1900 for a trans rebuild. And a friend of mine offered me is 88 XJ with 150k on the body and 30k on the engine for 400 to get me up and moving again.

Smile overdrive vibe

Isn't the over drive a "lock up converter" which has nothing to do with the trans. Take it to a tranny shop and have them check the torque converter.

The overdrive and lock up torque converter are two different things.
