Default Hi! Need tranny help!

Hello guys! I'm a noobie, just got my first Jeep! It's a 97 Grand Cherokee with the straight 6, auto tranny. Never had a Jeep before so I don't know the ins and outs of these things. Body is in incredible condition, and I got the jeep for next to nothing because it has a few issues, the biggest of which is the tranny. Seems to cruise down the highway fine, but when you're at slow speeds and idle it feels like it's out of gear, then all of a sudden locks up and goes! When you first shift into gear I can hear a rattle like an exhaust rattle, not sure if it's tranny but I think so. The guy I bought it from said it was some chip that was bad, but he didn't know anything other than that, and says when it gets hot, the problem goes away. What you think?

sounds like it could be the torque converter. check trans fluid and see if it's dirty and at proper levels.

Thank you very much for the reply. I'm gonna hopefully get some time this weekend to work on it. My girl works with the previous owner of this jeep, and talked to him, he said it's acted this way for the past couple years. Also, the power steering gear box leaks out the bottom, is there replaceable seals? Or is this a non-servicable part?

the power steering leak is your sector shaft seal. most people do replace their own.pitman ar puller/reomve snap ring and run engine/turn wheel to force seal out/clean mess/reverse
