I had one come into the shop a few months ago with the same symptom's. the owner bought the ZJ second hand and didn't have the key fob to disarm the alarm. the factory alarm system has ground wires on both front door lock cylinders and on the rear hatch. I chased the drivers door wire put a tap on it and grounded it to body. that disabled the alarm system so the truck would stay running.

Default Anti theft alarm

thanks for the information. The garage reset the fault through their computer but replaced or repaired nothing and the Jeep is now working. I have the handbook in the car which I will pick up today, I would have thought that this device will be described in there and how to disable it.
