Default HELP...4wd not working??

I am a new 4wd user....so be gentle. 1999 Grand Cherokee 4.7
In Low ratio I have clunks and banging, which I am told is a common fault with the transfer box....however

I got stuck on my driveway this morning on ice, and it appears that 4wd does not work in "High" ratio??

Is it possible to be only 2wd because of the transfer box fault??

Any ideas?

Thanks

Clunks and banging are not part of the normal operation of the tranfer case. It would be better if you gave a description of your vehicle (what transfer case?). How many miles and have you ever done a maintance to it? In reply to your last question without more info, have you ever adjusted the linkage?

New vehicle to me so I have done nothing to it....yet

It's done 95,000 and all appears good apart from this problem.
I have no idea what transfer case I'm afraid.
I contacted the last owner & he says everything was fine??? But I tend not to believe him
Could it simply be a matter of adjusting some cables??
