Default Grind/rattle in Zj

hey ! recently i started noticing weird sound occuring from time to time it sounds like grind/rattle noise and comes from the rear of my car it happens only when im driving not on any specific speed just sometimes and it sounds like its coming from my rear diff but im not sure i've checked the rear diff fluid and it looks Greyish and it wasnt at top like 1 cm off i hear this noise more in when i reverse its not loud you really have to listen to notice it what could this be? the car is 1996 jeep 5.2 with np242 and i got dana 44 if im not mistaken

btw i had this noise also in my old e36 325 with lsd but i never fixed it.

sorry for bad English.

Not sure what gear oil you use there, But if its geyish I would pull Diff cover and at least have a look, and get fresh oil in it. Doesent sound like it was too low. If something is wearing or grinding you should be able to see it.

You might try moving the driveshaft at the pinion yoke to see if it has excessive play (up / Down).

The gray color could be suspended metal particles from bearings or gear teeth. Try seeing if a magnet can pull particles out of a sample. Also, check if you have any backlash in the pinion.

Just grab the rear yoke of the driveshaft and see if it turns even the slightest bit without moving the wheels. If it turns enough to feel any play in the gears, it's too much. If it moves in and out, it's pinion bearings.
