Exclamation Grand Cherokee Noisy Overdrive

I have a 2000 4.0L Grand Cherokee. The overdrive over the last few months has gotten louder - a noisy whirr. If I disengage the overdrive the noise disappears. Has anyone had a similar experience/know what might be causing the noise?

Thanks

John

It may be a planetary gear set that has some chewed up gears, but you should have a transmission shop check it out to be sure.

Default Noisy / Vibration in Overdrive too

I also have a 2000 JGC 4.0L, and have a (sometimes significant, sometimes light) vibration in overdrive at 70-75mph, given slight acceleration in that speed range. Letting up on the gas pedal, pressing the 'overdrive off button',or shifting into neutral, instantly makes the vibration go away.

All front end components have been replaced (new wheel bearings, rotors, brake pads, CV joints and shafts).

Please share potential root causes/cost estimates.

Mike
