I could see it being a stuck caliper. The viscous coupler, no. when the VC fails it makes it hard to turn. It has no effect on straight line driving. When it does it, do the rpms go up and it just sits there? Does it only do it from a stop, does it occur after applying the brake, etc..

Don't see how it could be a thousand things. RPM's are very smooth, nothing seems strange, just as it please's it gives me the power of the 5.2 otherwise it's the evil 1.8, like I said it seems to be all transmission realated, my Dad was a drag racer so I learned much from him....rip...daddy.......

Danielle,
I'm no expert, and also find it hard to diagnose over a keyboard, but I'm candidly surprised at some of the fairly wild *** suggestions posted here.
I will stake my educated guess that it most definitely IS the transmission, and as noted above, makes almost all other suggestions hard to believe.
Your description of no movement regardless of rpm, yet sometimes engages is extremely characteristic of a bad VC (or on some other vehicles a torque converter) gone bad. This is a transmission problem, period.
Your tranny is most likely repairable, but if you go on Craigslist in your town, you'll find lots of parted out Cherokees or just the tranny alone quite cheap.
Also junkyards have these stacked up and even offer a short warranty. You DoNT need to go to a transmission shop and get taken to the cleaners.
Find a friend who is mechanical, or a trusted(?) small mechanic shop to swap it out. It will end up being cheaper than repairing yours in my opinion.
Best of luck! Let us know how it turns out....
