I just bought a 99 GC and recently the front axle seems to be locked up. Can anyone tell me what it might be? Is there anyway that it can be unlocked perm, and what would be the effects of doing that be. Any info would be appreciated this is my first forum post and first time on any forum.
Thanks Rick

It may not be the axle, it could be the viscous coupler in the transfercase depending on what case you have.

Not sure if its locked up or broken. Does any one know the steps to tell the differance? As you can see by these questions I am not a four wheel Guru yet....

im sure many of us here would like to help you...but before anyone can take a guess as to what may be the problem your going to have to be a little more specific as to the symtoms that you are experiancing. I.E. wont come out of four wheel drive, chatter in axle while turning, clunck..ect.also, what transfer case do you have?

or the front wheels wont turn like the gears are bound up.

TO THE OP!!! where are you located? in 2 weeks ill have a front axle i can let you have for extremely cheap. runs perfectly fine. will atleast get you on your way and you can use yours to rebuild. or a location you might be able to find someone local to you on here that might come over and check it out for you
