Lock out hubs are better for the front end than the original set up actually. Though the savings in MPGs would be minimal for how expensive it would be for a kit.
If you live somewhere that doesn't see much snow get an NP231. If you do get a lot of snow, look into the NP242 for the full time assurance and 2wd economy.
I've heard of people removing the front driveshaft too.

Welcome to CF. This gives you some info about switching from the 249 to the 231 or the 242 transfer case. >http://www.jeepforum.com/forum/f13/t...-np242-685644/

You're really not going to gain anything in mileage swapping cases. It's only fulltime when it needs to be.

Um, no, full-time is exactly how it sounds. It would be called auto 4x4 if that were the case. Like ford exploders.

Up to 1996 the 249 is full time, 1996-1998 the 249 is "on demand". Would it be easy to swap to a on demand 249 if i have a full time 249 ?

Auto 4x4 sucks. Plain and simple. It almost put me into the ditch on my first prom. I was going 40mph

96-98 cases are like 90 rear/ 10 front till you lose traction then it shifts up to 50% to the front. Its not 50/50 shfting up to 100% to one end like the 242
