Front Driveshaft question??
Hello Group,
I am a new member. I have a 1995 Grand Cherokee Limited witht he 5.2 engine and automatic transmission and AWD. My front driveshaft went bad at the rear knuckle just before the transfer case. I have been trying to find a new front driveshaft, but I ran into some issues. Looking for a new shaft online, I am only finding my 1995 GC, AWD, 5.2 engine, AT, listed with a np249 transfer case. I am sure that is what I have, but the driveshaft I have in my GC, is not the one they show. I have taken mine out and it is a #65-9773 shaft. They show that shaft working with a 231 transfer case. But the shaft they show working with the np249 case has a completely different end that bolts to the front axle. My shaft in my GC now is exactly like the one used in the models with the 231 case. The knuckle at the end that bolts to the transfer case is like the np249 setup, but the other end is like the 231 setup. Has anyone run into this problem before? I looked at my information on the tag on my door and my date for the GC is 9-94. Could this be between changes in manufacturing and parts? I have the Dana 30 in front, and the np249 transfercase, but the bolt up patterns are definitely not following the part books. Any help you can give me would be greatly appeciated.
Thanks.

A driveline shop should be able to rebuild and repair the shaft you have, it may even be cheaper than replacing it with a new one.

why dont you just take yours in and get it rebuilt, it might be cheaper than buying a whole new one from a dealer or what not, do you have a six states around there? or a tom woods? check into it, save some money

Those prices are not too bad, but if you can't get the correct one it does'nt really matter. Sometimes the yokes alone will cost in upwards of a couple hundred bucks when rebuilding a shaft. Look into all the options before spending any cash.

junk yard...replace u joints...you will be under $100. if you get vibes then take in to get balanced. another couple bucks.
no reason to get a warranted driveshaft for double IMO. the only thing to break will be the u-joints unless something crazy happened. unless you N drop it repeatedly i wouldnt expect any issues. im kind of surprised to hear yours is shot. rebuild it yourself if you want. there are a tone of writeups on that as well

Thank you all the great advice. This is a prime example of how great it can be to be a member of a large JEEP FAMILY. This site is GREAT!
I live in Payson, so we do not have allot of choices in mechanical shops.
Payson Driveline gave me an estimate on the repair of my original front driveshaft of, 80.00 dollars for the part plus 16.00 dollars x 3 for u-joints, and 50.00 dollars for labor. = 178.00
A1-cardone has my exact shaft for 203.00 dollars and free shipping, through AutoZone. It does have a limited Lifetime warranty, but that carries some questions on the "limited" definition. So, because it is so close in price compared to repairing my original shaft, I decided to go with the A1-cardone shaft.
It was great that I was able to talk to you all about a mechanical issue that pertains to our same vehicles and valuable experiences.
Thank you again,
Casper
