Greetings fellow Jeepers,

I have a 98 Gr. Cherokee 5.2L and my rear axle carrier bearings are shot. I've been researching the best route to either repair or replace the rear axle. I have quotes ranging from $725 to $800 to rebuild it, $250 to $700 for a used axle from various places around the country. Now there's a Ford 8.8 with the right gearing and a LSD, all ZJ brackets welded on and was pulled from a running Grand Cherokee ZJ for ~$400 near me. I was told by the seller that it was lifted but had no idea how much. My concern is the pinion angle if I get this axle as I'm not lifted (yet).

So should I get the Ford 8.8 or go for a used axle or rebuild. Also have limited funds so a new axle is out of the question.

Thanks JeeperJay

Get it! If you need to adjust the pinion angle you will still be money ahead if you buy adjustable rear arms.

Agree, Matching gears also, Would be a great axle for your Grand if it is already set-up for it.

Thanks for your replies guys. Would there be an issue with driveshaft length? It appears that the Ford 8.8 I'm looking at has a yoke instead of the ford flange at the pinion.

You may have to alter the drive shaft.

Hmmm, the seller said that the axle came out of a Grand Cherokee with a V8 5.9L so I don't know if it will fit.

I don't see where the 5.2 and the 5.9 driveshaft would be different. You said it was in a grand so the pinion yoke must already have been changed. Where is the problem?
