I am thinking of buying this Grand Cherokee!! The only thing I can see was the head liner was missing and he also told me that pinion seal in the rear axle went bad and needs to be replaced too. I have drove cherokee before but never a Grand Cherokee. So need some advice if I can get some please!!

On my '97 ZJ w/ 5.2 V8 and D44 rear axle, the rear pinion seal was bad but so was the pinion bearings, the ring & pinion gears, and the axle bearings. I paid for the repairs to be done right at a shop, and I love my Jeep. If you buy it I hope you enjoy it half as much as I've enjoyed mine.

How much did it cost you to get all that fixed?

$1,200 and I was glad to pay it since I don't have the skills to do the job correctly. Gear/axle work needs to be done right the first time. Don't waste your money paying for an idiot to do the job twice. JMO

If the axle's not making a whining/roaring noise and is just leaking at the pinion seal it would be cheaper/easier to repair.

Mine was making a kind of roaring noise that started about 20-25 MPH and increased with speed. It was louder on the gas and quieter when coasting, then load again when decelerating. It wasn't affected by turns so that showed it was the pinion bearings. If the noise changed in turns it could have been just the wheel bearings.

Are you sure it's not the exhaust hitting something and rattling, or the catalytic converter rattling?

That's a good idea. Look for any wet spots/leaks/rust while you're under there.

How bad does gas suck in it? Almost any jeep is not good with gas mileage.
