Fan turning itself off?

Fan turning itself off?
2000 Grand Cherokee Limited. Turn on switch to select defrost or direction of heat and the air conditioning comes on. After coming on it suddenly goes off and the fan stops and won't come back on. What's the scoop? NoRuts
