I have had to weld the cracks twice, this seems to be a common problem. Is there an after market set of extractors which the forum can recommend

1) Check your engine mounts. Exhaust manifold failures are most often (say, 90% or so of the time) accompanied by engine mount failure - the XJ exhaust system is actually quite rigid.

2) Reread that last clause - the XJ exhaust system is quite rigid. If you're doing an exhaust refit, especially if you're going to replace the downpipe (you can install one that is not crimped if you're lifted three inches or more,) have one made up that can accept a flex joint 4-6" long. This will offer some "give" that is really needed - but not present.

NB: If you replace one engine mount, replace all three. Else, the ones that are old (and on their way to failure) will accelerate wear on the one you just replaced - and you'll have to replace it again.
